Breast Augmentation
In the 1920s, we women hid our breasts inside corsets to look like boys. By the 1950s, we used corsets and bras to make our breasts appear like torpedoes or apples. In the 1960s, influenced by feminist movements, we tried to ignore our breasts. However, the woman inside us couldn't bear the suppression and hiding of this symbol of femininity and whispered to us to embrace our hidden beauty. Thanks to women who listened to this inner voice, breast augmentation has become the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery.
What is a Breast Implant?
Thomas Cronin and Frank Gerow produced the first breast implant in 1962 and performed the first successful breast augmentation surgery on a patient named Timmie Jean Lindsey. Thus began the evolution and journey of breast implants. Modern silicone implants are now jelly-like, maintain their shape, prevent silicone leakage, and resist deformation.
Do Breast Implants Cause Cancer or Connective Tissue Disorders?
Although there have been concerns that implants might cause autoimmune connective tissue disorders or cancer, high-volume, long-term patient studies have not substantiated these claims. Today, both surgeons and patients seek implants that look natural, do not create an artificial appearance, and are almost indistinguishable from natural breast tissue.
How Are Breast Implants Placed?
Breast implants are often placed through incisions in the armpit, around the areola, or in the inframammary fold. My preferred incision is the inframammary fold incision because it allows precise placement and submuscular positioning of the implant. This incision is not visible when standing but may be seen as a 4 cm scar when lying down. Submuscular placement via this incision does not damage the milk ducts or breast tissue and does not complicate future mammography examinations.
Will Drains and Bandages Be Used After Surgery?
Drains are placed in both breasts on the day of surgery, and the incision sites are dressed. A supportive bra designed for breast implants is fitted. On the first postoperative day, the drains are removed, and the bandages are taken off. It is mandatory to wear the bra for at least six weeks.
Is the Surgery Very Painful?
Thanks to the local anesthetics used during surgery, there is no pain on the day of the procedure. Pain can be controlled in the following days with oral painkillers. Shoulder and arm exercises, such as brushing your hair, can begin the day after surgery.
How Long Do Breast Implants Last?
Regardless of the brand, breast implants typically last between 10 and 15 years. Around the 10th year, you may start asking, "When should I replace my implants?" By the 15th year, you and your surgeon will plan the timing for replacement surgery.
